Dreaming Of A Freaking Fairytale: Episode 1 Recap

In episode 1 “The Newderella” of the fantastical yet relatable kdrama, “Dreaming of a freaking fairytale,” our protagonist, Shin Jae-rim, is seen dealing with the death of her father. While she mourns his loss, she is also disappointed and upset by her father’s final letter to her. In the letter, he suggests that she work at Chungdam Heaven, a posh club, find a wealthy husband, and marry quickly to avoid making the same mistake he did. He goes on to explain that his hard work led to his early death and that she should not follow in his footsteps.

This episode also provides a glimpse into Shin Jae-rim’s troubled family life. We learn that her father married her stepmother when Shin Jae-rim was quite young. While her stepmother adored her father, she was not particularly fond of Shin Jae-rim. Shin Jae-rim is uncomfortable living with her stepmother, Hwang So-ra, and her two stepsisters, Kang Soo-jin and Kang Hwa-jin, following the death of her father. However, because she cannot afford to pay rent, she is forced to adjust and live with the family.

The scene then shifts to our male protagonist, the charming yet bratty Moon Cha-min. We quickly learn that he is an eighth-generation chaebol. The episode hints that he is not particularly wealthy. Despite his financial difficulties, he gives his employees a raise.

Viewers are then transported to Chungdam Heaven, where a wedding takes place. We see Shin Jae-rim and her friend No Sun-jung at the wedding. Halfway through the wedding, the bride’s ex-boyfriend causes a scene. However, Moon Cha-min handles the situation by hitting the ex-boyfriend with an umbrella, and he steals the show.

Why does Shin Jae-rim decide to take a job at Chungdam Heaven?

Following that, we learn a little more about Shin Jae-rim’s finances. We learn that her late father is in debt, and as a result, Shin Jae-rim and her family bear the burden of the debt. This makes Shin Jae-rim and her step-sisters angry at their late father. Furthermore, Shin Jae-rim feels sorry for her stepmother, Hwang So-ra, and decides to help her financially in any way possible. As a consequence of this, Shin Jae-rim decides to follow her father’s advice and take a job at Chungdam Heaven.

Shin Jae-rim and Moon Chae-min’s first meet cute in Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale

Shin Jae-rim is seen going to an interview for a job at Chungdam Heaven near the end of episode 1 of Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale. Unfortunately for her, she has trouble with her heels and ends up accidentally kicking it in Moon Cha-min’s direction. The episode concludes on a hilarious note, with Moon Chae-min accusing Shin Jae-rim of attempted murder.
