David’s Flashback (Old Testament)
- David meets his wife Abigail and his son Daniel.
- David selects a lamb and anoints it with oil for the sacrifice at the Passover.
- Six days before the sacrifice, they anoint the lamb’s feet.
- David and Abigail explain the Passover Meal to Daniel.
- David has the bridle which will be passed down to Jesus by his Foster Father Joseph.
Veronica & Jesse
- Veronica and Jesse appear outside the temple to give their testimony.
- Veronica is the woman who bled for 12 years and was healed by Jesus in Season 3 Episode 5.
- Jesse (Simon Z’s brother) was healed by the pool of Bethesda in Season 2 Episode 4.
- A Sadducee attempts to discredit Jesus, claiming he’s a magician and won’t make it for the Passover.
- The crowd eagerly waits for Jesus’s coming and his stories.
- Later in the episode, Veronica and Jesse discover Jesus’s arrival and spread the news in the crowd.
- They lead the crowd singing “Hosanna to The Son of David” awaiting Jesus’s arrival.
Mary of Bethany and the Perfume
- Mary searches for a precious perfume to anoint and honor Jesus.
- The perfumer pulls out a flask of pure nard.
- Mary pays a hefty price for the nard (300 denarii).
- Later, when the disciples and Shmuel, Yussif, and his Father dine with Jesus, Mary anoints the nard at Jesus’s feet and dries them with her hair.
- Shmuel criticizes Mary for being immodest.
- Judas also criticizes and calls it a waste of money.
- Jesus recognizes that Mary is preparing him for his burial, which leaves the disciples and Mary of Nazareth shocked and disheartened.
- Only Lazarus seems to understand the hidden meaning behind his message.
Pilate and Atticus, Herod, Joanna, and Claudia
- Pilate and Atticus
- The Jewish crowds in Jerusalem baffle Pilate.
- Atticus warns Pilate and tells him not to pay attention to the numbers but focus on the fervor because the Emperor might be testing his ability at the Passover week.
- Atticus mentions the rumors of Lazarus’s resurrection, which surprises Pilate.
- Atticus entertains the possibility of the rumor based on what he’s witnessed.
- He emphasizes the importance of what people believe, not necessarily the truth.
- Pilate, Herod, Herodias, Joanna, and Claudia
- Herod, Herodias, Joanna, and Claudia arrive in Jerusalem.
- Caiaphas sends a message to Herod, maybe about Jesus.
- Pilate is inquisitive about Herod’s thoughts on Jesus.
- Herod dismisses Jesus but grows concerned about the rumors calling him a “king.”
- Pilate plots to kill Lazarus again and stop the resurrection rumors.
- Claudia questions whether Jesus would resurrect him again.
- Claudia and Joanna
- Claudia admires the Jews’ faith.
- Joanna reveals that she doesn’t share the bed with Chuza due to his affair, and Claudia relates that she doesn’t share the bed with Pilate due to her nightmares.
- Claudia reveals that Pilate received his appointment due to his family’s influence and not because of his skill.
- Joanna feels like a pawn in men’s games.
- Claudia believes they can be more if they have stronger faith like the Jews.
- Joanna’s Transformation
- Joanna feels inspired by the crowd’s excitement to see Jesus.
- She leaves Chuza (mostly divorcing him).
- She buys palms and distributes them for Jesus’s arrival.
Jairus, Eden, Gaius, Salome, Barnaby, and Shula
- Eden, Salome, Jairus, Shula, and Barnaby are on their way to Jerusalem for Passover.
- Gaius meets them and regrets he cannot join due to his responsibilities.
- Gaius sends regards to Peter and Matthew through Eden.
- The group arrives in Bethany.
- James and John enjoy Martha’s cinnamon cakes and hide them upon seeing their mother Salome.
- The group prepares to join the caravan as they head towards Jerusalem.
Yussif, Shmuel, Sanhedrin, and Judas
- Gederah criticizes Jesus’ miracles and calls them sorcery.
- Yussif defends Jesus citing his father’s experience at Lazarus’s resurrection.
- Shmuel offers to investigate whether Jesus might be Elijah.
- Caiaphas plots to get Jesus killed by Herod to avoid Roman intervention.
- Shmuel visits Jesus and feels surprised when Jesus recognizes him.
- Shmuel and Yussif discuss the narrow minds and views of the Sanhedrin.
- Jesus challenges Shmuel with the idea that the Messiah is for the lowly and not just religious leaders.
- Shmuel criticizes Jesus and is disappointed with the encounter after the anointing of his feet by Mary of Bethany’s incident.
- Shmuel fails to accept Jesus and leaves.
Judas
- In the beginning, Judas is seen stealing money and hiding his actions.
- He follows Thomas secretly and Thomas is seen burying something.
- Judas views Shmuel and Yussif’s arrival as a chance to influence the Sanhedrin.
- Judas is upset with Jesus’s approach to Shmuel’s questioning.
- Jesus remains unfazed and least bothered by Judas’s criticism.
- Later, Judas meets Shmuel outside and finds agreement over the use of nard.
- Shmuel calls Judas sensible among the rest of his disciples.
- Judas believes Jesus is the Son of God but questions his ways.
- Shmuel agrees to meet Judas in Jerusalem.
Matthew and Simon Z
- Jesus instructs Matthew and Simon Z to find a specific donkey; the donkey must be unridden.
- As they go in search for the donkey, Atticus is seen following them.
- Simon Z and Matthew find the appropriate donkey but are stopped by the servant.
- Simon Z and Matthew explain the prophecy of the unridden donkey and the servant recognizes it.
- Excited by this news, he spreads the message of his coming.
- Simon Z and Matthew bring the donkey to Jesus and prepare the donkey for Jesus to ride.
Jesus and Mary
- Mary brings Jesus’s bags that include the bridle.
- Jesus explains to Mary that the bridle symbolizes Joseph (dad) being there with them on their journey.
- Mary explains the hardship of knowing her son’s death and Jesus admits he can’t always shield her from the inevitable.
- Mary decides to enter Jerusalem with Jesus.
- Jesus gives the special bridle to the donkey.
- Jesus assures his disciples that he always loved them and will continue till the end and asks his disciples if they would follow him. Peter reassures his faith and says, “Where else would we go.”
- Thomas looks disheartened (due to Ramah’s death).
- Jesus takes one look at his disciples before sitting on the donkey.
- Jesus, Mary, along with the disciples, set out for Jerusalem.
