Dreaming Of A Freaking Fairytale: Episode 1 Review
The first episode of Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale introduces us to the main character, Shim Jae-rim. Her character is effortlessly given a Cinderella-like backstory, although with a more modern twist. We see her struggling with an evil stepmother and her two stepsisters. Furthermore, her father throws a pumpkin at her, reminding us of the Cinderella story, which is both nostalgic and creative.
The plot differs from Cinderella’s in that instead of a prince who is smitten with her, she meets a bratty eighth-generation chaebol. Furthermore, the slipper used here serves as a source of conflict between the leads rather than a romantic beginning, which is an intriguing twist.
Overall, the episode is fascinating and will keep you hooked. However, one can argue that some classics should not be modernized because they lose their essence. I tried to accept the modern spin, but it didn’t work for me. That’s not to say the storyline and characters aren’t interesting, they are. However, reinterpreting a classic story like Cinderella’s seems a bit unnecessary, when the story is more than capable of standing on its own.
Dreaming Of A Freaking Fairytale: Episode 2 Review
Episode 2 of Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale begins with a humorous yet confrontational scene between the main characters, Shin Jae-rim and Moon Cha-min. This results in an entertaining and dramatic job interview at Chungdam Heaven.
The episode also reveals the conflicting personalities of the main characters. While Shin Jae-rim believes in fairytales, Moon Cha-min is repulsed by the concept of love, resulting in a humorous clash between the two. We also see Shin Jae-rim and Moon Cha-min engage in an amusing drinking competition.
Several elements in the episode stand out. However, the best element has to be the leads realizing their attraction for each other, as well as Moon Cha-min’s vulnerability. Furthermore, the scene in which Moon Cha-min carries and takes Shin Jae-rim to the washroom is both touching and hilarious.
Overall, the episode strikes an appropriate balance between humor and heartwarming moments. Furthermore, the characters have grown on you from this point itself, demonstrating the show’s potential. We’re excited to see where Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale goes from here.
Overall Impressions
As a whole, the first two episodes of Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale introduces us to the main plot and characters. While we get a glimpse into Shin Jae-rim’s backstory, Moon Cha-min’s past, background, and reasoning remain a mystery to us.
The show also makes extensive use of the classic Cinderella trope, but it modernizes it. The show contains numerous references to Cinderella, including the evil stepfamily, the slipper, the pumpkin, and the clock.
